Some Helpful Facts About The Chrysanthemum Frutescens

The Chrysanthemum frutescens is otherwise known as Argyranthemum frutescens, Marquerite Daisy, Paris Daisy, Bushy Daisy, Boston Daisy or Cobbity Daisy.  Whatever name you decide to call it, the Chrysanthemum frutescens is absolutely adorable.  The characteristics of this flower are primarily associated with being a white flower with a yellow center.  It can however, come in variations such as a soft pink petaled flower or a white petal with pink tips which seems to be gaining great popularity.  The flower begins to bloom in May and then continues to do so all through the summer months, sometimes even well into September.   This flower does well in flower beds, garden troughs and other moveable containers.

The Chrysanthemum frutescens is an annual flower that tends to grows in a very compact fashion and the foliage never seems to become yellow.  The flower found its origin from the Canary Islands and is now grown, bred and loved all over the entire world.  This plant has limited height growth and since the flowers bloom so compact, this makes it an ideal houseplant or centerpiece for any table.  This flower does have shallow roots though so they do require a good amount of watering as well as adequate fertilizing.  Do not feel guilty about clipping your outdoor flowers to bring inside either, they need to be cut often to promote them to continue to bloom.

The Chrysanthemum frutescens is called a “friendly” flower.  It seems to have a symbolic meaning of innocence and purity and often represents a new beginning which is probably what has given it such popularity in wedding bouquets.  The true meaning of this flower means “loyal love”.  How fitting for a wedding flower.

Although looking at a Chrysanthemum frutescens, one might initially think they are simply observing one flower, however, one flower they are not.  This particular flower, believe it or not, has two flowers in one.  There are disc florets that are found at the center of the flower body and then ray florets that are along the outside.  These two flowers of florets make up one very unique looking flower.

When planting the Chrysanthemum frutescens outside in flower beds you should always pick for them a very sunny place to be their happy home and add quite a bit of manure and compost to their housing soil so that it will continue to become rich and assure that it drains well.  This flower will flourish in rich soil.  You will need to sow the seeds right into the flowerbed, at an approximate depth of about one inch below the soil's surface.  If you purchase full grown flowers from a nursery and are transplanting them then you will want to dig the hole not much larger than the root ball, cover it back up with original soil and be sure to water it well.  Chrysanthemum frutescens, when planting, should be spaced approximately 9 to 12 inches apart since they are the type of flower that is going to spread.  If you have a hot summer or little rainfall then they should be watered about every two to three days.  When fertilizing this flower it is helpful to choose a fertilizer that is very high in phosphorus since this will ensure your soil to remain rich and your flowers to bloom big and bright.
